Sonda da NASA encontra tubo de lava de grandes dimensões em Marte

Tubos de lava existem tanto em nosso planeta quanto em mundos vizinhos, como Marte e a Lua. Em imagens recentes da câmera High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment — ou apenas HiRISE — da sonda Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), da NASA, foi identificado o teto de um tubo de lava muito maior do que qualquer outro que exista em nosso planeta.

A abertura vista na imagem parece ter 50 metros de diâmetro, mas as sombras não permitem ver com clareza as partes que se romperam. Entretanto, se esse for realmente o tamanho da cavidade, é possível que o tubo também tenha essas dimensões — e é aí que ele se diferencia dos tubos de lava do nosso planeta, que são bem menores e não costumam passar dos 15 metros. Os tubos de lava se formam com o fluxo de lava sob a superfície: enquanto a lava do lado externo se esfria e se torna sólida, seu interior continua derretido e segue fluindo. Em algum momento, a lava flui para fora do tubo. Essas formações podem ser encontradas na Terra, Lua e Marte.

Para alguns cientistas, estudar os tubos de lava deveria ser uma prioridade em missões por alguns motivos interessantes. Para começar, eles podem ser o abrigo de formas de vida que sobreviveram às condições de Marte: conforme o planeta perdeu sua atmosfera e se esfriou, essas formas de vida podem ter se abrigado no interior dos tubos de lava para resistirem às condições hostis da superfície. Se isso realmente tiver acontecido, pode ser que as formas de vida ainda estejam por lá — claro, se elas existirem.

Além disso, os tubos de lava podem ser importantes também para o uso humano. Para alguns pesquisadores, eles são locais interessantes para a construção de habitats e bases. Francesco Sauro, co-autor de um estudo comparativo dos tubos de lava na Terra, Lua e Marte, sugere que essas formações sejam abrigos estáveis contra radiação cósmica e solar, além de serem uma proteção contra o impacto de micrometeoritos, que acontecem bastante na superfície dos corpos planetários. Vale lembrar, entretanto, que construir habitats nos tubos de lava é difícil devido à dificuldade de acessá-los e possíveis rochas perfurantes que podem existir neles.

Até tudo isso acontecer, são necessários estudos destas formações. É aí que está outra dificuldade: embora seja bastante possível que os tubos de lava da Lua e Marte sejam parecidos com os da Terra, ninguém os observou por dentro ainda. As imagens que temos deles mostram uma parte do chão do tubo, e só. Ainda, existem riscos ao explorá-los com humanos, e as agências espaciais não querem colocar suas equipes em perigo. Então, é possível que a tarefa fique a cargo de robôs mesmo.

Ainda não existem planos sólidos para a exploração de tubos de lava nestes mundos, mas pode ser que esses planejamentos surjam em um futuro não tão distante — até porque uma missão semelhante àquelas criadas para explorar as luas Titã e Europa, mas focada nos tubos de lava, poderia ter execução mais simples e até gerar menos custos.
