O Que os ‘Especialistas’ Não Nos Dizem Sobre Contentamento

Há algumas semanas, o pastor de nossa igreja pediu que escrevêssemos uma palavra que descrevesse o nosso estado emocional atual. Eu escrevi “contente”. Nem sempre estou contente. Algumas vezes, durante os meses recentes, eu me senti inquieto, até mesmo ansioso, acerca de tudo o que vem acontecendo. Em muitos dias, posso dizer que estou começando a me sentir esperançoso ou otimista, mas minha principal emoção é o contentamento. 

Mais tarde, procurei pela palavra “contente” no dicionário e na enciclopédia. Descobri sinônimos como “satisfeito, deleitado, tranquilo, confortável, despreocupado e feliz”. O contentamento, de fato, parece ser a porta para se experimentar a felicidade.  

Nos dias atuais, muitas atividades parecem dedicadas a disseminar o descontentamento. Na verdade, grande parte da nossa cultura tem esse foco. Dizem-nos constantemente que jamais seremos felizes sem o mais novo brinquedo ou ferramenta, o mais reluzente e rápido carro, a maior e mais elaborada casa. Não vamos nos sentir aceitos – nos dizem o tempo todo – até que usemos o tipo certo de desodorante, percamos peso ou o nosso time ganhe o grande jogo.   

Palestrantes motivacionais e livros de autoajuda nos dizem: “Se bobear, você dança”. Então, tratamos de nos manter ocupados, nunca nos sentindo contentes. Sempre existe alguma coisa mais surgindo para aprofundar nossa sensação de descontentamento com aquilo que já possuímos.  

Penso no famoso empresário e magnata a quem perguntaram: “O quanto é suficiente?” Sua resposta foi simples: “Só um pouquinho mais.” Se sempre desejarmos mais, nunca teremos o bastante. As palavras “mais” e “contente” são rivais implacáveis. O contentamento vem de estarmos felizes onde estamos e com aquilo que temos. Eu sempre quero fazer um trabalho melhor, me sentir mais saudável e estar mais seguro financeiramente. Mas também desejo ser mais jovial, melhor amigo e cônjuge, e passar mais tempo desfrutando das bênçãos que já possuo.   

O contentamento não é um destino. É uma decisão, acompanhada por paz, alegria e gratidão. A aquisição de mais coisas não vai trazer mais felicidade; apreciar o que já temos, sim. Este foi o tema central do “Sermão da Montanha” de Jesus. Ele falou acerca de ser “pobre em espírito”, “ser humilde (força sob controle)”, sobre ter “fome e sede de justiça”, ser “misericordioso” e “puro de coração”. (Mateus 5:3-8). 

Isso leva ao contentamento, Jesus ensinou, não a aquisição de coisas materiais. Ele continuou, dizendo: “Não acumulem para vocês tesouros na terra, onde a traça e a ferrugem destroem, e onde os ladrões arrombam e furtam. Mas acumulem para vocês tesouros nos céus, onde a traça e a ferrugem não destroem, e onde os ladrões não arrombam nem furtam. Pois onde estiver o seu tesouro, aí também estará o seu coração.” (Mateus 6:19-21).  

O rei Salomão dedicou grande parte do livro de Eclesiastes para dizer o que ele tinha aprendido acerca de contentamento, e o apóstolo Paulo escreveu: “Sei o que é passar necessidade e sei o que é ter fartura. Aprendi o segredo de viver contente em toda e qualquer situação…” (Filipenses 4:12).  

Uma amiga apresentou uma tese de doutorado sobre agricultura de subsistência na América Central, estudando os mais pobres entre os pobres. Eu perguntei se houve alguma surpresa. Ela imediatamente começou a falar sobre como todos eram felizes. Aquelas pessoas, mal tirando o sustento de um pedaço de terra, eram os mais felizes que se pode ser. Ouvi o cantor country Marty Stuart dizer certa vez: “Se eu tiver uma nota de cem dólares no bolso e um Cadillac para dirigir, estou contente. Quem poderia desejar mais?” Eu concordo… e nem precisa de um Cadillac.
