Timelapse do Google Earth reúne imagens de satélite dos últimos 36 anos na Terra

Se observar localidades do mundo todo pela perspectiva de um satélite não é interessante o bastante para você, o Google quer dar mais motivos para destacar seu acervo de imagens feitas do alto do planeta. Nos moldes da ferramenta que chegou ao Android em março deste ano, a grande atualização do Google Earth agora introduz o timelapse com registros datados de 1984 até 2020 de toda a Terra.

É quase como uma viagem no tempo que ilustra as transformações do planeta das últimas décadas. No anúncio do recurso, o Google exalta como a paisagem muda ao longo dos anos: na construção de novas cidades, com o crescimento populacional e, infelizmente, no impacto da humanidade no meio ambiente e os consequentes efeitos do aquecimento global sobre geleiras.

O “Timelapse do Google Earth”, como foi nomeado, é resultado da colaboração entre agências espaciais, como a NASA e a Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA), num aglomerado soma 24 milhões de registros. “Levou cerca de 2 milhões de horas em processamento em milhares de máquinas no Google Cloud para compilar 20 petabytes de registros espaciais em um vídeo de 4,4 terapixels — equivalente a 530 mil vídeos em resolução 4K”, explica o Google.

Uma vida em registros científico

Segundo a diretora do Google Earth, Rebecca Moore, a grande atualização só foi possível devido ao amplo acervo de fotografias do programa Copernicus (da ESA), bem como registros da NASA e do estudo US Geological Survey. “A alta resolução da missão Sentinel-2, de imageamento, foi parte integral do desenvolvimento do Timelapse, e as visualizações globais únicas que estamos levando para pessoas de todos os lugares”, disse.

A missão mencionada por Moore é relacionada ao conjunto de satélites Sentinel, missões com duplas de espaçonaves que produziram dados para o programa europeu Copernicus. A missão conta com dois objetos espaciais idênticos posicionados em uma órbita polar, com alta cobertura e entrega de dados, que resultam em imagens impressionantes da Terra.

A mão humana sobre o mundo

Embora seja um recurso sem fins científicos, as imagens são um meio para compreender as mudanças causadas pelo ser humano em algumas localidades — como a expansão de áreas urbanas e alterações no curso de rios. Alguns exemplos apresentados pelo Google mostram consequências claras do aquecimento global e o crescimento do setor de produção de energia.

Para facilitar a busca, o projeto Create Lab da Universidade de Carnegie Mellon, nos Estados Unidos, separou os melhores “passeios temporais” em categorias prontas como “Beleza frágil”, “Mudança nas florestas”, “Expansão urbana” e outros. E se o interesse for algum local específico, basta inserir na barra de pesquisas superior para “viajar” até ele.

Infelizmente, imagens aéreas mais claras estão restritas apenas a algumas localidades, mas dá para encontrá-las rapidamente nos destaques do Timelapse do Google Earth. As mudanças que ocorrem ao decorrer do tempo nem sempre são tão evidentes, portanto não fique surpreso se os satélites não registraram grandes alterações em pequenas cidades.
