Como os navios não afundam? A física por trás da flutuação de gigantes de metal

O que acontece se o navio encher de água?

Se, por algum motivo, a água invadir o interior do navio, o ar que ajudava a manter a flutuação será substituído por água — e aí a densidade do navio aumenta. Quando ela ultrapassa a densidade da água, o empuxo não é mais suficiente para sustentá-lo, e o navio afunda.

É por isso que o projeto de um navio leva em conta compartimentos estanques (que não deixam a água entrar) e outros sistemas de segurança.

E por que ele não tomba com o movimento das ondas?

Os navios são projetados com um baixo centro de gravidade e uma base larga. Isso ajuda a manter o equilíbrio mesmo em mares agitados. O casco também tem formas que ajudam a estabilidade, e o peso da carga é distribuído de forma estratégica para não causar inclinações perigosas.
