Diagnóstico e tratamento

Arceneaux acredita que sua experiência como sobrevivente de câncer vai ajudá-la a se preparar para os desafios da missão.

“(A doença) me ensinou a esperar o inesperado e seguir em frente. Também acho que ter tido câncer me deixou mais resistente“, afirma.

Ela conta que, aos 10 anos de idade, treinava para receber a faixa preta em taekwondo quando um de seus joelhos começou a doer. O médico da escola disse que podia se tratar de uma torção.

Mas, meses mais tarde, quando a menina estava mancando, sua mãe, Colleen, suspeitou que o problema era mais grave. Colleen conta que entrou em pânico quando viu um tumor “do tamanho de um ovo” acima da parte interna do joelho da filha.

Exames revelaram que se tratava de osteossarcoma. Arceneaux teve de ser internada e iniciar tratamento com quimioterapia.

A cirurgia para retirar o tumor também removeu grande parte do fêmur, e a menina recebeu implante de hastes metálicas na perna. Com isso, Arceneaux será também a primeira pessoa com uma prótese a viajar ao espaço.

Ela passou por meses de fisioterapia até conseguir voltar a caminhar por conta própria. Ainda durante a internação, transformou-se em uma espécie de embaixadora do St. Jude, compartilhando sua história com outros pacientes infantis e divulgando o trabalho de pesquisa do hospital.

Depois de ter alta, Arceneaux voltou diversas vezes ao St. Jude, inicialmente como paciente, para consultas de acompanhamento e, em 2013, como estagiária do programa de Educação em Oncologia Pediátrica. Ela se formou em 2016 e passou a trabalhar como assistente médica.

“Acho que saber que eu também sou uma sobrevivente ajuda as famílias (de crianças com câncer)“, afirma.

Preparação

Arceneaux adora viajar. Ela já percorreu vários países e tinha como objetivo conhecer todos os continentes antes de completar 30 anos.

Mas a jovem que na infância havia visitado a Nasa com a família e sonhado em viajar ao espaço achava que, diante do histórico de câncer e do fato de ter uma prótese na perna, jamais seria astronauta.

As exigências médicas para os astronautas da Nasa, a agência espacial americana, são rígidas e impossibilitariam que Arceneaux viajasse ao espaço. Mas as missões espaciais civis, patrocinadas por indivíduos privados, abriram essa possibilidade para pessoas como ela.

Os participantes desse tipo de missão costumam pagar caro. Quando decidiu doar três dos quatro lugares na missão, Isaacman disse que queria que não apenas bilionários tivessem a oportunidade de participar.
