‘Amnésia infantil’: por que não lembramos de nascer e de aprender a andar ou a falar?

Sempre que ensino sobre memória em minha aula de desenvolvimento infantil na Universidade Rutgers, nos Estados Unidos, começo pedindo aos meus alunos que se lembrem de suas primeiras recordações.

Alguns alunos falam sobre seu primeiro dia de pré-escola; outros falam sobre uma ocasião em que se machucaram ou ficaram chateados; alguns citam o dia em que seu irmão mais novo nasceu.

Apesar das grandes diferenças nos detalhes, essas memórias têm algumas coisas em comum: são todas autobiográficas, ou memórias de experiências significativas na vida de uma pessoa, e normalmente não aconteciam antes dos 2 ou 3 anos de idade. Na verdade, a maioria das pessoas não consegue se lembrar de eventos dos primeiros anos de suas vidas — um fenômeno que os pesquisadores apelidaram de amnésia infantil.

Mas por que não conseguimos nos lembrar das coisas que nos aconteceram quando éramos menores? A memória começa a funcionar apenas em uma certa idade? Eis aqui o que os pesquisadores sabem sobre bebês e memória.

Os bebês conseguem formar memórias

Apesar do fato de que as pessoas não conseguem se lembrar muito do que aconteceu com elas antes dos 2 ou 3 anos de idade, pesquisas sugerem que os bebês são capazes de formar memórias — mas não os tipos de memórias que você conta sobre si mesmo.

Pesquisas do laboratório da psicóloga Carolyn Rovee-Collier nas décadas de 1980 e 1990 mostraram que bebês podem formar alguns desses outros tipos de memórias desde tenra idade. Claro, os bebês não conseguem dizer exatamente o que eles se lembram. Assim, a chave para a pesquisa de Rovee-Collier foi desenvolver uma tarefa que fosse sensível às mudanças rápidas dos corpos e habilidades dos bebês, a fim de avaliar suas memórias por um longo período.

Na versão do estudo para bebês de 2 a 6 meses, os pesquisadores colocam o bebê em um berço com um móbile pendurado na cabeça. Eles medem o quanto o bebê chuta para ter uma ideia de sua propensão natural para mover as pernas. Em seguida, eles amarram um barbante da perna do bebê até o final do móbile, para que sempre que o bebê chutar, o móbile se mova.

Usando esse método, Rovee-Collier e colegas descobriram que aos 6 meses, se os bebês forem treinados por um minuto, eles podem se lembrar de um evento um dia depois. Quanto mais velhos os bebês, mais tempo eles se lembravam. Ela também descobriu que você pode fazer com que os bebês se lembrem de eventos por mais tempo treinando-os por períodos mais longos e dando-lhes lembretes – por exemplo, mostrando-lhes o celular se movendo rapidamente sozinho.

Por que não memórias autobiográficas?

Se os bebês podem formar memórias nos primeiros meses, por que as pessoas não se lembram das coisas daquela fase inicial da vida?

Ainda não está claro se as pessoas experimentam amnésia infantil porque não conseguimos formar memórias autobiográficas, ou se simplesmente não temos como recuperá-las. Ninguém sabe ao certo o que acontece, mas os cientistas têm alguns palpites.

Um deles é que as memórias autobiográficas exigem que você tenha algum senso de si mesmo. Você precisa ser capaz de pensar sobre seu comportamento em relação a como ele se relaciona com os outros. Pesquisadores testaram essa capacidade no passado usando uma tarefa de reconhecimento de espelho chamada teste rouge. Envolve marcar o nariz de um bebê com uma mancha de batom vermelho ou blush — ou “rouge“, como diziam na década de 1970, quando a tarefa foi criada.

Em seguida, os pesquisadores colocam o bebê na frente de um espelho. Bebês com menos de 18 meses apenas sorriem para o bebê fofo no reflexo, não mostrando nenhuma evidência de que eles se reconhecem ou a marca vermelha em seu rosto. Entre 18 e 24 meses, as crianças tocam o próprio nariz, mesmo parecendo envergonhadas, sugerindo que conectem o ponto vermelho no espelho com o próprio rosto – elas têm algum senso de si mesmas.

Outra explicação possível para a amnésia infantil é que, como os bebês não têm linguagem até mais tarde no segundo ano de vida, eles não conseguem formar narrativas sobre suas próprias vidas que possam lembrar mais tarde.

Por fim, o hipocampo, que é a região do cérebro amplamente responsável pela memória, não está totalmente desenvolvida no período da infância.

Os cientistas continuarão a investigar como cada um desses fatores pode contribuir para o motivo pelo qual você não consegue se lembrar muito ou nada sobre sua vida antes dos 2 anos de idade.
