Estação Espacial Internacional vai receber “computador espacial” da HP

A Estação Espacial Internacional (ISS) vai receber em breve um belo upgrade em sua capacidade de processamento de dados. No próximo sábado (20) uma espaçonave de carga Cygnus, da Northrop Grumman, levará ao espaço o Spaceborne Computer-2 (SBC-2), um computador com recursos de inteligência artificial projetado pela Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).

O SBC-2 foi criado para “acelerar a exploração do espaço” e aumentar a autossuficiência dos astronautas, permitindo o processamento de dados em tempo real e reduzindo o tempo necessário para chegar a uma conclusão em vários experimentos, incluindo análise de imagens médicas, sequenciamento de DNA e análise de dados de sensores e satélites remotos, de “meses” para “minutos”.

Obviamente, a ISS tem vários computadores a bordo. Mas o ambiente inóspito, com exposição das máquinas a raios cósmicos, níveis de radiação mais altos do que na Terra e restrições na dissipação de calor e consumo de energia, faz com que seja necessário usar sistemas “sob medida”, criados para enfrentar os rigores do espaço.

Além de mais caros, estes sistemas não são tão poderosos quanto o “maior e melhor” disponível aqui na Terra, onde muitas destas restrições não se aplicam. Com isso, muito do processamento “pesado” dos dados produzidos pela ISS é feito em solo.

O objetivo do projeto Spaceborne Computer é testar se servidores de baixo custo, amplamente disponíveis aqui na Terra, podem ser equipados com recursos de software que os tornem mais “robustos” para sobreviver ao lançamento em um foguete e à operação no espaço.

O Spaceborne Computer-2 é a “segunda geração” do projeto. A primeira foi lançada em 2018 e retornou em junho de 2019, após um ano e meio em órbita. Desta vez, o teste durará de “dois a três anos”. Além do processamento local, o SBC-2 também terá integração com a plataforma de nuvem da Microsoft, a Azure, para tarefas onde mais poder de processamento é necessário.

O hardware do SBC-2 é baseado em um servidor Edgeline Converged Edge da HPE, equipado com GPUs que podem ser usadas para o processamento mais eificente de dados visuais, como as imagens de calotas polares na Terra ou imagens de raios-x em pesquisas médicas. Além disso, as GPUs podem ser usadas em projetos de IA e aprendizado de máquina.

“Os avanços combinados do Spaceborne Computer-2 permitirão que os astronautas eliminem a grande latência e longos períodos de espera associados com o envio e recebimento de dados da Terra, permitindo que obtenham resultados imediatos em toda uma gama de projetos”, diz a HPE.
