Genética, Circunstâncias e Escolhas

Há muita discussão nos dias de hoje sobre quem nós somos e porque fazemos o que fazemos. Alguns fatores não podemos controlar e foram determinados até mesmo antes de nascermos. Por exemplo, se você cresceu e veio a ser uma pessoa de grande estatura – talvez acima de 1,80 m, jamais será capaz de competir como jóquei numa corrida de cavalos. Por outro lado, se seus pais são de baixa estatura e os seus familiares também não são altos, não faria sentido algum você querer ser o central de uma equipe de basquetebol. 

Circunstâncias podem afetar nossa vida, como influências familiares; grau de riqueza (ou falta dela); saúde e viabilidade de boas escolas definitivamente contribuem para o nosso desenvolvimento pessoal. Até mesmo eventos aparentemente aleatórios como “estar no lugar certo no tempo certo” – ou estar no lugar errado na hora errada. Mas será que estamos destinados a ficar limitados pelas circunstâncias?  

O escritor e consultor em liderança, Tim Kight, sugere que não. Ele fornece essa perspectiva simples e direta: “Você é moldado por sua genética. Você é influenciado pelas circunstâncias que o rodeiam. Você é definido por suas escolhas.”

Há grande perigo em focar em coisas como genética e circunstâncias – coisas que ocorreram no passado. Elas não podem ser mudadas e sempre estarão fora do nosso controle. Entretanto, podemos controlar nossas escolhas – a forma como reagimos a essas circunstâncias. Vemos a evidência disso de diversas maneiras: pessoas que cresceram em lares desfavorecidos: uma tornando-se viciada em drogas ou envolvida em comportamentos criminosos, enquanto a outra resolve fazer o que for necessário para superar isso e tornar-se um médico, empresário ou professor. 

Mesmo que não possamos modificar nossa genética ou desfazer as circunstâncias adversas do passado, ainda podemos afetar grandemente nossa vida através das escolhas que fazemos e das decisões que tomamos. A Bíblia tem muito a dizer sobre isso:  

A que você vai dedicar sua vida?  Nós podemos direcionar nossa vida para alcançar muitas coisas, muitos “deuses” a quem podemos servir e dedicar a maior parte do nosso tempo e energia. Aquilo que decidimos buscar faz uma diferença incrível em como será a nossa vida. “…escolham hoje a quem irão servir… Mas, eu e minha família serviremos ao Senhor.” (Josué 24:15).  

Como você vai definir “sucesso”?  Existem muitas maneiras de medir o sucesso pessoal: dinheiro, posses materiais, progressos na carreira, status e influência na comunidade. Alguns têm valor maior e mais duradouro do que outros. Aquilo que escolhermos vai guiar o curso da nossa vida. “Não acumulem para vocês tesouros na terra, onde a traça e a ferrugem destroem, e onde os ladrões arrombam e furtam. Mas acumulem para vocês tesouros nos céus, onde a traça e a ferrugem não destroem, e onde os ladrões não arrombam nem furtam. Pois onde estiver o seu tesouro, aí também estará o seu coração… Ninguém pode servir a dois senhores; pois odiará um e amará o outro, ou se dedicará a um e desprezará o outro. Vocês não podem servir a Deus e ao Dinheiro.” (Mateus 6:19-21, 24). 

Ao que você vai dar maior valor?  Nós temos muitas opções quando se trata de escolher prioridades, metas e objetivos. Essas escolhas irão determinar em grande parte o valor total de nossa vida. “Prefiram a Minha instrução à prata, e o conhecimento ao ouro puro, pois a sabedoria é mais preciosa do que rubis; nada do que vocês possam desejar compara-se a ela.” (Provérbios 8:10-11).
