Ao longo dos anos venho tendo o privilégio de conhecer homens e mulheres inesquecíveis, geralmente através do CBMC. Uma dessas pessoas foi Robert D. Foster, que foi para a presença do Senhor em 2016, aos 96 anos de idade. Uma filosofia simples guiou sua vida: “Vale a pena viver a vida; vale a pena amar as pessoas; vale a pena confiar em Deus.”
Durante muitos anos, Bob escreveu uma meditação semanal, “Take Two for Monday Morning” (algo como Dose Dupla nas Manhãs de Segunda), na qual ele contava histórias para comunicar as verdades das Escrituras de forma poderosa. Uma delas era sobre o dia em que Josiah Wedgwood, o inglês criador da famosa cerâmica Wedgwood, escoltou um nobre britânico através de sua fábrica. Um dos empregados de Wedgwood, um adolescente, os acompanhava.
O aristocrata usava uma linguagem profana e vulgar em sua conversa com Wedgwood. De início, o adolescente ficou chocado com aquele palavreado; em seguida, ficou fascinado pelas piadas grosseiras e riu delas. Wedgwood, porém, estava desgostoso e profundamente aflito.
Ao final do passeio, ele mostrou ao visitante um vaso de design incomparável. O homem ficou encantado por sua forma elegante e rara beleza. Quando tentou alcançá-lo, desejando admirá-lo mais de perto, Wedgwood, propositalmente, deixou que ele caísse no chão. A peça se espatifou em inúmeros pequenos pedaços! Praguejando irado, o nobre gritou: “Eu queria o vaso para minha coleção, e você o destruiu com sua falta de cuidado!”
O anfitrião respondeu: “Senhor, há outras coisas arruinadas mais preciosas que um vaso e que jamais poderão ser restauradas. O senhor nunca poderá devolver a esse jovem que acaba de deixar-nos, a reverência por coisas sagradas que seus pais tentaram ensinar a ele durante anos. O senhor desfez todo o trabalho deles [com o seu linguajar] em menos de meia hora.”
Que poder têm as nossas palavras, para um grande bem ou para um grande dano. Isso não é para julgar as pessoas, já que muitos de nós em momentos de estresse ou raiva deixamos escapar uma ou duas palavras mal escolhidas. Porém, como vemos na Bíblia, uma palavra oportuna pode servir de remédio suave, enquanto palavras descuidadas podem causar grandes estragos.
Nossas palavras são reflexo do nosso caráter. Será que gostaríamos que as pessoas avaliassem o tipo de pessoa que somos com base nas coisas que falamos e na forma como falamos? “Afaste da sua boca as palavras perversas; fique longe dos seus lábios a maldade.” (Provérbios 4:24).
Nossas palavras são reflexo do nosso coração. Assim como um balde cheio que quando bate em alguma coisa derrama o seu conteúdo, nossas palavras podem revelar nossos pensamentos, sentimentos e valores mais profundos. “O justo pensa bem antes de responder, mas a boca dos ímpios jorra o mal.” (Provérbios 15:28).
Nossas palavras são reflexo de nossas crenças. Muitas pessoas escolhem suas palavras para causar boa impressão em indivíduos ou grupos específicos. Nós, os que somos seguidores de Jesus Cristo, entendemos que a nossa fé deve governar nosso discurso. “Que as palavras da minha boca e a meditação do meu coração sejam agradáveis a Ti, Senhor…” (Salmos 19:14).
Nossas palavras são reflexo de nosso autocontrole. Pessoas impulsivas e descontroladas podem cuspir palavras das quais se arrependam mais tarde, mas a sabedoria quer reinar sobre nossa língua para prevenir desastres verbais. “Quem tem conhecimento é comedido no falar, e quem tem entendimento é de espírito sereno.” (Provérbios 17:27).
