A cada minuto, cada um dos seus glóbulos vermelhos completa sua jornada por todo o sistema circulatório, levando oxigênio a todas as células — da ponta da cabeça aos dedos dos pés.

E, a cada segundo, seu corpo produz 2 milhões de glóbulos vermelhos — ou eritrócitos — que substituem aqueles que já morreram.

Esta é uma das 13 curiosidades sobre o sangue que a matemática Hannah Fry e o geneticista Adam Rutherford compilaram para a BBC

1. Você tem cerca de 26 trilhões de glóbulos vermelhos

As células mais abundantes em seu corpo são os glóbulos vermelhos. Acredita-se que haja cerca de 26 trilhões nos homens — entre as mulheres, a quantidade é um pouco menor.

As plaquetas também são bastante abundantes, embora seu número seja bem menor.

No total, quase 90% das células do seu corpo se encontram no sangue.

2. Em seus 3 ou 4 meses de vida, cada glóbulo vermelho dá 150 mil voltas ao redor do seu corpo

Eles percorrem uma “autoestrada” viscosa (nossas veias e artérias) a uma velocidade de cerca de 2 km/h.

3. Os eritrócitos mortos favorecem que as fezes sejam marrons

Seu corpo não pode simplesmente descartar os glóbulos vermelhos “velhos”, porque eles contêm ferro, algo muito valioso para fabricar mais eritrócitos.

Em vez disso, certas células extraem o ferro e, ao mesmo tempo, geram bilirrubina, que chega ao fígado.

Este órgão o excreta na forma de bile para o sistema digestivo, onde é posteriormente transformado em uma substância chamada urobilinogênio, que posteriormente dá às fezes sua cor característica.

4. Há mais de 30 sistemas de grupo sanguíneos

Os quatro mais conhecidos são A, B, AB e O, mas há muito mais.

Na verdade, “sabemos que existem 34 sistemas com mais de 300 variantes conhecidas“, escreveu para o site The Conversation Robert Flower, professor da Universidade de Sydney, na Austrália, que trabalha para o Banco de Sangue da Cruz Vermelha.

Nem todos os grupos sanguíneos são compatíveis entre si

5. Mas os dois grupos principais testados são ABO e fator Rh positivo ou negativo.

O teste ABO mostra se a pessoa tem um destes quatro tipos sanguíneos: A, B, AB ou O.

O teste de Rh verifica a existência do antígeno (ou fator) Rh.

Dentro deles, há subgrupos.

6. A primeira transfusão de sangue bem-sucedida…

…foi realizada em 1818 pelo obstetra britânico James Blundell.

A paciente era uma mulher com hemorragia que havia acabado de dar à luz.

Blundell tirou sangue do braço do marido e inseriu na paciente com uma seringa. Ela viveu para contar a história, assim como metade de suas pacientes.

Acredita-se que aquelas que morreram eram de tipos sanguíneos incompatíveis.

7. O sangue pode ser rejeitado pelo seu corpo se for do grupo incorreto

Após fazer o teste ABO, você pode obter como resultado A, B, ambos (AB) ou nenhum (O).

Se alguém do tipo A recebe sangue do tipo B, seu corpo tentará atacar as proteínas estranhas do tipo B.

8. Se você é AB, é um ‘receptor universal’

Uma vez que você tem A e B, seu corpo pode receber qualquer combinação destas duas proteínas em uma transfusão de sangue.

9. Se você é do tipo O, é um ‘doador universal’

O sangue do tipo O não contém nenhum “invasor estranho” que possa resultar em rejeição.

Este é o tipo de sangue armazenado nas emergências de hospitais e em ambulâncias, quando não há tempo para testar o tipo de sangue do paciente antes de fazer uma transfusão.

10. Se o seu grupo sanguíneo é O, você tem menos probabilidade de sofrer de trombose venosa profunda

Trata-se de um coágulo que causa dor e inflamação e pode ser perigoso.

Pode acontecer com qualquer pessoa a qualquer momento, mas este tipo de sangue determina que o risco é menor.

11. O fator Rh é outro tipo de proteína fora dos glóbulos vermelhos

A chamada proteína “fator Rh” é herdada por meio dos genes. Se você a tem, é Rh positivo. Se não tiver, é Rh negativo.

Mulheres grávidas são examinadas para ver se são Rh negativo. Neste caso, se o bebê for Rh positivo e houver qualquer tipo de mistura de sangue durante o parto, a mãe pode provocar uma reação imune e produzir anticorpos, o que poderia prejudicar gestações posteriores, uma vez que os mesmos permanecem no corpo.

Hoje em dia, se detecta se existe o chamado “fator Rh” e, se necessário, são administrados antibióticos para bloquear a reação imune da mãe e proteger futuros embriões.

12. Alguns dos grupos sanguíneos minoritários têm suas próprias vantagens evolutivas

Por exemplo, se você tem sangue “Duffy negativo”, é mais resistente à malária.

Na África Ocidental, mais de 95% da população herda esta característica útil.
