Já sabemos que o sistema planetário da estrela LHS 1140 conta com dois planetas semelhantes à Terra, sendo que um deles tem até as condições necessárias para abrigar vida. Agora, pesquisadores do Center for Astrobiology realizaram um novo estudo do sistema, que resultou em dados precisos, além de evidências fortes da possível existência de um terceiro planeta orbitando a estrela. Os astrônomos utilizaram o telescópio Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), da NASA, e o instrumento Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations (ESPRESSO) no Very Large Telescope, do Observatório Europeu do Sul (ESO), para uma nova análise do sistema da LHS 1140. Os dados permitiram obter valores precisos da massa e raio dos planetas, além de cálculos da densidade e composição interna deles.

A LHS 1140 é uma anã vermelha de baixa massa, que se encontra a aproximadamente 39 anos-luz de distância de nós na constelação de Cetus, a Baleia. Essa estrela de 5 bilhões de anos tem tamanho equivalente a um quinto do tamanho do Sol, e é conhecida por ter dois planetas a orbitando: o mais externo, chamado de LHS 1140b, é uma superterra que foi identificada em 2017. Este mundo tem massa equivalente a 6,5 massas da Terra, é rochoso e encontra-se na zona habitável da estrela, que é a área que permite a existência de água em estado líquido — e os cálculos indicam isso.

Jorge Lillo-Box, pesquisador que liderou o estudo, comenta que “esse é o planeta na zona habitável em que a possível quantidade de água líquida presente foi medida com maior precisão”, e isso o torna um dos melhores planetas para a busca de biomarcadores. Já o planeta mais interno, o LHS 1140c, é um mundo rochoso com massa equivalente a 1,8 massas da Terra; o novo estudo levanta a possibilidade de considerá-lo um irmão do nosso planeta.

Com a precisão dos dados, os pesquisadores encontraram evidências de um novo candidato a planeta neste sistema, com período orbital de 78,9 dias. Esse terceiro planeta, que recebeu o nome de LHS 1140d, tem massa mínima equivalente a 4,8 massas da Terra e provavelmente é um mundo que está na fronteira entre gasoso e rochoso além da zona habitável. Ainda, um estudo detalhado dos dados foi realizado em busca de objetos co-orbitais ou exotroianos, e sugere que o LHS1140 c possa ter parceiros co-orbitais.

Finalmente, os autores concluem que a chance da existência deste terceiro planeta no sistema o tornam um alvo importante para estudos futuros que melhorem o entendimento das propriedades de atmosféricas de mundos rochosos expostos à radiação de diferentes estrelas. David Barrado Navascués, co-autor do estudo, comenta que “o sistema LHS 1140 deveria ser alvo de estudos da atmosfera exoplanetária da sonda Rosetta. Nesse sentido, o novo telescópio espacial James Webb terá papel fundamental nestes estudos futuros em função de seu tamanho e instrumentação”, conclui. O telescópio deverá ser lançado no ano que vem.
