Essa é a foto com a exposição mais longa ja tirada — e ela é incrível

Uma fotografia que, talvez, seja a exposição mais longa já feita, registrou o Sol nascendo e se pondo por anos sem a necessidade de câmeras e lentes caras: na verdade, a foto foi feita simplesmente com uma latinha de cerveja com uma pequena abertura e papel fotográfico, que ficaram esquecidos no Bayfordbury Observatory, da University of Hertfordshire.

A imagem, de autoria de Regina Valkenborgh, foi feita quando ela começou a capturá-la perto do fim de seu curso de artes na Universidade, em 2012. Ela queria captar imagens sem utilizar tecnologias modernas e, para isso, usou uma lata de cerveja para funcionar como câmera pinhole, junto de papel fotográfico. Esse tipo de câmera funciona com uma pequena abertura pela qual a luz atravessa e projeta a imagem na direção oposta ao furo. Assim, ela deixou a lata em um dos telescópios do observatório, que seguiu esquecida por lá.

Foi somente em setembro de 2020 que David Campbell, diretor técnico do observatório, encontrou a câmera e a removeu. A foto que resultou do trabalho mostra quase 3 mil “rastros” deixados pelo Sol conforme ele nasceu e se pôs entre o verão e outono durante oito anos e um mês. Já o lado esquerdo da foto apresenta do domo do telescópio mais antigo do observatório, enquanto um portal atmosférico pode ser visto do centro para a direita. A estrutura foi construída quando metade da exposição já havia ocorrido.

A técnica da longa exposição é excelente para indicar a passagem do tempo, e costuma ser bastante utilizada em fotografias de paisagens, cidades e outros. Para Regina, que hoje trabalha como técnica de fotografia, o fato de a foto ter ficado intocada e guardada por David foi uma grande sorte, ainda mais após tanto tempo: “tentei essa técnica algumas vezes no observatório, mas as fotos foram estragadas pela umidade e o papel fotográfico se enrugou”, explica. “Eu não pretendia capturar uma exposição por tanto tempo e, para a minha surpresa, ela sobreviveu. Pode ser a mais longa exposição já feita, ou uma delas”.

Em 2011, Regina fez um exercício semelhante, no qual produziu uma foto de longa exposição iniciada em 21 de junho e finalizada em 21 de dezembro de 2011. A foto foi escolhida como Foto Astronômica do Dia pela NASA, e também foi feita com uma lata e uma pedaço de papel fotográfico. Neste caso, os rastros do Sol ficam mais altos em função do solstício de verão no hemisfério norte, e vão se “abaixando” conforme o solstício de inverno se aproxima.
