“O que é a verdade?” Esta é uma pergunta que incontáveis pessoas têm feito no decorrer dos séculos. Tem sido também um tema recorrente para filósofos, sociólogos, aconselhadores, escritores e até mesmo para empresários e profissionais, como se “verdade” fosse uma mercadoria variável em algum tipo de bufê filosófico.
A procura pela verdade é importante, seja durante uma investigação criminal, o julgamento em um tribunal ou no processo de uma pesquisa científica. Curiosamente, ouvimos as pessoas falarem em “minha verdade”, como se o que é válido para uma pessoa pudesse ser totalmente diferente para outra. Certamente, todos nós temos nossas próprias opiniões sobre vários assuntos, mas em muitos casos, a verdade não é objeto de múltiplas escolhas.
O consultor em liderança Tim Kight escreve: “A verdade existe independentemente daquilo em que alguém ‘acredita’. Se eu acredito que a camada de gelo na superfície de um lago congelado é grossa, quando na verdade ela não é, a minha crença não altera a espessura dessa camada. Se eu agir com base em minha (falsa) crença e for esquiar no lago, estarei correndo um risco. Se eu convidar outras pessoas para se juntarem a mim, elas também estarão em perigo.”
A verdade, ao contrário dos preços para mercadorias ou serviços, não é algo negociável. Podemos ter pontos de vista diferentes sobre várias coisas, mas a verdade absoluta existe de fato, ao contrário do que certas facções da sociedade nos querem fazer acreditar.
Uma notável discussão a respeito da verdade aconteceu quando Pôncio Pilatos, o governante romano, interrogava Jesus Cristo depois que os líderes judeus o prenderam. Ele perguntou a Jesus: “…Você é o rei dos judeus?…Que é que você fez?”… Jesus respondeu: “Tu dizes que eu sou rei. De fato, por esta razão nasci e para isto vim ao mundo: para testemunhar da verdade. Todos os que são da verdade Me ouvem.” Então, Pilatos fez a famosa e, aparentemente, discutível pergunta: “Que é a verdade?” (João 18:33-38).
Por que nós deveríamos nos preocupar com a verdade no mercado de trabalho? Não é nosso desafio diário promover nossa marca, finalizar vendas, e alcançar lucros de forma a permanecermos no mercado? Sim, isso é correto – mas não devemos sacrificar a verdade enquanto buscamos esses objetivos. É bem útil considerarmos algumas das coisas que a Bíblia tem a dizer sobre a verdade:
A verdade prova que somos dignos de confiança. Para algumas pessoas, a verdade somente é usada quando é conveniente. A honestidade somente é importante para elas quando não interfere com o “fechamento de um negócio”. Entretanto, os benefícios imediatos de distorcer a verdade, geralmente carregam com eles consequências no longo prazo. “Os lábios que dizem a verdade permanecem para sempre, mas a língua mentirosa dura apenas um instante.” (Provérbios 12:19).
A verdade oferece segurança e confiança. Quando as pessoas demonstram que valorizam a verdade, honestidade e integridade fazem com que seus clientes – e também seus funcionários, acionistas e fornecedores – sintam-se confiantes ao trabalhar com elas. “A fortuna obtida com língua mentirosa é ilusão fugidia e armadilha mortal.” (Provérbios 21:6).
A verdade traz liberdade. Uma das duras realidades de ser desonesto é a dificuldade de lembrar o que foi dito se tivermos sido falsos. Afirmações verdadeiras, por outro lado, são comparativamente fáceis de recordar. A honestidade nos liberta do medo de ser apanhados mentindo. Como Jesus disse a Seus seguidores: “E conhecerão a verdade, e a verdade os libertará.” (João 8:32).
