A Abordagem ‘Ambas as Coisas/ E’ no Processo de Tomar Decisões

Frequentemente, as mais difíceis decisões que os líderes profissionais e empresariais precisam tomar não estão entre as questões que são branco e preto – obviamente, certo ou errado – mas entre duas tonalidades de cinza. Por exemplo, um CEO amigo meu que possui uma empresa familiar está pensando em demitir uma irmã antiética. Outro amigo meu está se debatendo com a ideia de conceder uma segunda chance a um funcionário – seu melhor amigo – que está apresentando baixa performance e arrastando a companhia para baixo. 

Que empresário não lutou com o sentimento de que deveria despender mais horas no trabalho, mas também sabendo que seu cônjuge estava lutando com o comportamento das crianças em casa e precisava de apoio? Muitas vezes, decidir o que fazer não tem respostas fáceis ou simples. Devo demiti-la ou não? Devo deixá-lo ir ou mantê-lo, na esperança de que ele possa melhorar? Devo escolher as demandas do trabalho ou cumprir meu dever em casa?  

A Solução pode ser “ambas as coisas/e”.  Em algumas decisões, ao invés de jogar uma moeda para o alto para chegar a uma decisão arbitrária, nós precisamos trazer os dois lados da moeda para a equação. Precisamos considerar múltiplas realidades. Gosto do que Chip e Dan Heath relatam em seu livro, Decisive (sem edição em português). Eles mencionam um especialista que diz: “Sempre que na vida você se sentir tentado a pensar ‘Devo fazer isso OU aquilo’, em lugar disso, pergunte a si mesmo: ‘Existe alguma maneira de eu ser capaz de fazer isso E aquilo?’ Surpreendentemente, é frequente que seja possível fazer ambas as coisas.” Poderíamos chamar isso de tomada de decisão “ambas as coisas/e”. 

Deus é um Deus de “ambas as coisas/e”.  O teólogo Wayne Grudem escreve: “Tudo o quanto [Deus] diz ou faz é consistente com todos os Seus atributos.” Deus não lança uma moeda e escolhe uma qualidade ou outra de caráter. Com Ele é sempre “ambas as coisas/e”. Em outras palavras, Deus é sempre Graça e Verdade; Amor e Ira; Misericórdia e Justiça; Sabedoria e Generosidade; Alegria e Tristeza pelo pecado. 

Duas verdades mantidas sob tensão.  Adotar duas verdades mantidas em tensão foi o que me ajudou a atravessar algumas das decisões mais traiçoeiras que enfrentei nos últimos anos. Por exemplo: Comunidade é mantida em tensão com a responsabilidade pessoal. Compaixão é mantida em tensão com a justiça. Generosidade é mantida em tensão com a condição de administrador. Perdão é mantido em tensão com a prestação de contas. 

Eu mencionei o exemplo do amigo que não estava trabalhando com afinco e a necessidade de tomada de decisão quanto a isso, mas com o sentimento de se sentir puxado em duas direções aparentemente diferentes. Você sabe que Jesus diz: “Perdoe quantas vezes forem necessárias.” (Mateus 18:22), mas o executivo em você sabe que o apóstolo Paulo também escreveu: “Se você não trabalha, também não come.” (II Tessalonicenses 3:10). O que você faz? Você deve perdoar ou tê-lo por responsável? Como seria poder ser benevolente e ainda ser um bom administrador para a companhia?  

Ao invés de demiti-lo ou olhar para o outro lado (tomada de decisão do tipo ou/ou), que tal se você desse ao indivíduo mais seis semanas para provar que poderia atingir metas mensuráveis? Ele tem a generosidade de uma chance a mais, e você tem ou uma produtividade aumentada, ou um período razoável e meios para deixá-lo ir. Esta é uma decisão do tipo “ambas as coisas/e”. Isso também se aplica à tentativa de equilibrar casa e trabalho, ou a forma de considerarmos a generosidade pessoal.  As tensões entre a tomada de decisão “ambas as coisas/e” podem ser difíceis de adotar, mas elas proporcionam uma vida e trabalho mais ricos e mais autênticos.
