Medidas contra a COVID-19 já “eliminaram” duas cepas do vírus da gripe

Medidas que buscam conter a transmissão do coronavírus SARS-CoV-2, como distanciamento social, uso de máscaras, higienização constante das mãos e evitar ambientes sem circulação de ar, podem ser a chave para explicar o desaparecimento de duas cepas da gripe, segundo cientistas. Com essa proteção extra, as pessoas adoeceram menos em decorrência da influenza nos últimos meses em todo o mundo.   

Desde março de 2020, curiosamente, os pesquisadores não detectaram mais duas cepas comuns da gripe. Especificamente, foram: a linhagem Yamagata do vírus influenza B; e um subtipo (clado 3c3) do vírus influenza A (H3N2). No entanto, o desaparecimento dessas variantes é parte de uma queda bem maior no número de pessoas que relataram casos de gripe no ano passado.

Queda na circulação do vírus da gripe

Não é possível atestar que as duas variantes do vírus da gripe foram extintas, mas é inavegável a queda de notificações da doença em todo o mundo. De qualquer forma, o desaparecimento, mesmo que temporário, desses dois tipos pode ser uma boa surpresa para os pesquisadores responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento de vacinas.  

Isso porque, a cada ano, esses pesquisadores precisam estudar e estimar quais cepas serão predominantes, no momento da vacinação. Em outras palavras, eles precisam prever quais cepas estarão circulando com meses de antecedência tanto no hemisfério Sul quanto no Norte. Com duas cepas comuns a menos, essa decisão de definir os 4 tipos a serem incluídos na vacina tetravalente pode ser muito mais acertada.

Bancos de dados apontam para aumento apenas da COVID-19

Normalmente, pesquisadores registram, por ano, cerca de 20 mil novas sequências genéticas do vírus da gripe no GISAID, um repositório usado para estudos da área de saúde pública para monitorar tanto a evolução da gripe quanto dos coronavírus. No entanto, apenas 200 sequências foram carregadas no último ano. Vale explicar que esse é um parâmetro bem específico, mas fundamental para os estudos sobre os vírus respiratórios, já que engloba informações de todo o mundo.

No entanto, cientistas alertam que as cepas ainda podem estar lá fora e não foram registradas por causa da emergência da COVID-19 nos últimos meses, por exemplo. “Só porque ninguém viu não significa que desapareceu completamente, certo? Mas poderia”, explicou Florian Krammer, virologista do Hospital Mount Sinai, ao STAT News. 

Além disso, Richard Webby, pesquisador ligado à Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS), lembrou que apenas uma parte dos vírus da gripe passa por sequenciamento genético. Dessa forma, as previsões sobre quais vírus da gripe podem ter desaparecido são limitadas, já que se baseiam nos bancos de dados. Por outro lado, Webby observa uma grande redução na diversidade dos vírus da gripe circulantes e aposta que será interessante ver como isso se desenvolverá nos próximos anos. A menor variabilidade pode representar maior capacidade do organismo humano em se defender, por exemplo.
