Trabalhar ‘demais’ mata 745 mil pessoas por ano no mundo, revela estudo

Jornadas de trabalho excessivas estão matando milhares de pessoas por ano, de acordo com a OMS (Organização Mundial da Saúde).

O primeiro estudo global do tipo revela que 745 mil pessoas morreram em 2016 de derrame e doenças cardíacas relacionadas a longas horas de trabalho.

O relatório mostra que as pessoas que vivem no Sudeste Asiático e na região do Pacífico Ocidental são as mais afetadas.

E a OMS avalia que a tendência pode piorar devido à pandemia do coronavírus.

O Brasil está na faixa de países que têm até 4% da população exposta a longas jornadas de trabalho (55 horas ou mais por semana).

Isso coloca o país entre os menos afetados por jornadas exaustivas do mundo – nos países onde o problema é mais grave, esse percentual chega a atingir mais de 33% da população.

A pesquisa descobriu que trabalhar 55 horas ou mais por semana está associado a um risco 35% maior de AVC (acidente vascular cerebral) e 17% maior de morrer de doença cardíaca, em comparação com uma semana de 35 a 40 horas de trabalho.

O estudo, realizado em parceria com a OIT (Organização Internacional do Trabalho), também mostrou que quase três quartos dos que morreram em consequência de longas jornadas de trabalho eram homens de meia-idade ou mais velhos.

Frequentemente, as mortes ocorreram muito mais tarde na vida, às vezes décadas depois, do que o período em que foram realizadas as longas horas de trabalho.

Semanas atrás, um post no LinkedIn de Jonathan Frostick, de 45 anos, ganhou ampla repercussão. Ele descreveu como teve uma revelação quanto ao problema das longas jornadas.

Os pesquisadores afirmam que há duas maneiras pelas quais as longas jornadas de trabalho levam a piores resultados de saúde.

Andrew Falls, de 32 anos e engenheiro de campo em Leeds, na Inglaterra, afirma que as longas horas de trabalho em seu emprego anterior afetaram sua saúde mental e física.

“Cinquenta a 55 horas por semana eram a regra. Eu também ficava fora de casa por semanas a fio.”

“Estresse, depressão, ansiedade”, relata. “Eu estava num estado constante de abatimento.”

Depois de cinco anos, ele deixou o emprego para recomeçar como engenheiro de software.

O número de pessoas trabalhando longas jornadas estava aumentando antes da chegada da pandemia, de acordo com a OMS, e era de cerca de 9% da população global total.

No Reino Unido, o Instituto Nacional de Estatísticas Britânico (ONS, na sigla em inglês) mostrou que as pessoas que estavam trabalhando em casa durante a pandemia fazem uma média de seis horas extras não remuneradas por semana.

As pessoas que não trabalhavam em casa fazem em média 3,6 horas extras semanais, segundo o ONS.
