A Aerion Corporation está empenhada em vencer a corrida pela produção do sucessor do Concorde, um dos nomes mais importantes do segmento de aeronaves comerciais supersônicas.

Para isso, a empresa está apostando alto em seu jato AS2. Assim como o irmão mais velho, o modelo promete voar de Nova Iorque a Londres em apenas quatro horas e meia.

Destinado ao setor corporativo, o avião comporta de oito a 12 passageiros e pode atingir velocidade superior a 1.600 km/h.

Diferente do Concorde, que foi descontinuado em 2004 por seu alto custo de manutenção e pela emissão de poluentes na atmosfera, o AS2 é descrito como uma aeronave “incrivelmente eficiente” e com a menor queima de combustíveis possível.

O investimento total é de US$ 6,5 bilhões, e o projeto conta com o apoio da Boeing e da GE. A meta é entregar pelo menos 300 unidades do jato supersônico nos próximos dez anos de produção.

O voo de estreia está agendado para 2024, e as primeiras unidades chegam ao mercado até 2026.
