Pássaro em risco de extinção ‘esquece’ como cantar

Um pássaro raro se tornou tão ameaçado que começou a perder a capacidade de cantar, dizem os cientistas.

O melífago-regente (Anthochaera phrygia), outrora abundante no sudeste da Austrália, agora está listado como criticamente ameaçado de extinção — há apenas 300 exemplares da espécie no mundo.

“Eles não têm a chance de andar por aí com outros melífagos e aprender como deveria soar seu canto“, explica o pesquisador Ross Crates, que publicou suas descobertas na revista científica Proceedings B, da Royal Society do Reino Unido, instituição britânica dedicada à promoção do conhecimento científico.

Crates, que é membro do Difficult Bird Research Group da Universidade Nacional da Austrália, em Canberra, está agora tentando preservar o canto dos pássaros ensinando melífagos em cativeiro as canções de seus parentes selvagens.

‘Agulha num palheiro’

O objetivo inicial dos pesquisadores não era estudar o canto do melífago-regente; era simplesmente a encontrar os pássaros.

“Eles são tão raros e a área que poderiam ocupar é tão grande — provavelmente 10 vezes o tamanho do Reino Unido —, que estávamos procurando uma agulha num palheiro”, diz Crates.

Durante essa busca meticulosa, ele começou a notar pássaros que estavam “cantando canções estranhas”.

“Não soavam como um melífago-regente, pareciam espécies diferentes“, recorda.

Os pássaros aprendem a cantar da mesma maneira que os humanos aprendem a falar.

“Os pássaros jovens, quando deixam o ninho e vão para o mundo, precisam se associar a outros machos mais velhos, para que possam ouvi-los cantar e repetir essa canção ao longo do tempo”, explica Crates.

O melífago-regente, que perdeu cerca de 90% de seu habitat, agora tem uma população tão pequena e dispersamente distribuída que os machos jovens simplesmente não conseguem encontrar outros machos e ouvir seu canto.

“Então, eles acabam aprendendo o canto de outras espécies“, acrescenta Crates.

O canto natural do melífago-regente basicamente “desapareceu” em 12% da população, conforme revelou a pesquisa.
