Pesadelos frequentes podem ser sinal de Parkinson, diz estudo

Todas as noites, quando vamos dormir, passamos algumas horas em um mundo virtual criado por nossos cérebros, em que somos protagonistas de uma história que não criamos conscientemente. Em outras palavras, sonhamos.

Especificamente, mostrou que o desenvolvimento de pesadelos ou sonhos ruins frequentes numa idade mais avançada pode ser um sinal de alerta precoce da doença de Parkinson iminente em pessoas até então saudáveis.

Aqueles que relataram ter pesadelos frequentes no início do estudo eram duas vezes mais propensos a desenvolver Parkinson em comparação com aqueles que tinham menos de uma vez por semana.

Curiosamente, uma proporção significativa dos diagnósticos aconteceu durante os primeiros cinco anos do estudo.

Durante esse período, os participantes com pesadelos frequentes apresentaram três vezes mais chances de desenvolver a doença de Parkinson.

Esses resultados sugerem que os adultos mais velhos que um dia serão diagnosticados com doença de Parkinson podem começar a ter pesadelos e sonhos ruins alguns anos antes de desenvolver os sintomas característicos da doença, como tremores, rigidez e lentidão de movimentos.

O estudo também mostra que nossos sonhos podem revelar informações importantes sobre nossa estrutura e função cerebral e podem vir a ser um alvo importante para pesquisas em neurociência.

No entanto, é importante destacar que apenas 16 dos 368 homens com pesadelos frequentes nesse estudo desenvolveram Parkinson.

Como o Parkinson é um mal relativamente raro, é improvável que a maioria das pessoas que têm pesadelos frequentes venha a ter a doença.

Ainda assim, para aqueles que apresentam outros fatores de risco conhecidos de Parkinson, como sonolência diurna excessiva ou constipação, a descoberta pode ser importante: estar ciente de que sonhos ruins e pesadelos frequentes (principalmente quando começam subitamente na vida adulta) podem ser um indicador precoce de Parkinson pode levar a diagnósticos e tratamentos precoces.
