Há uma estratégia adotada por grandes líderes corporativos, como Tim Cook, CEO da Apple, e Jeff Bezos, fundador da Amazon, de prestar muita atenção às palavras que dizem.

Trata-se da “regra do silêncio incômodo”, um conceito desenvolvido por Justin Bariso, consultor e autor do best-seller “IE Aplicada, Guia para a Inteligência Emocional no Mundo Real” (em tradução livre).

O ponto consiste em: quando você é confrontado com alguma pergunta desafiadora, em vez de responder imediatamente, deve fazer uma pausa e pensar profundamente em como quer responder.

E por que é incômodo? Porque a pausa pode ser de 10 segundos, 20 ou até mais tempo, deixando o interlocutor desconcertado, caso não esteja acostumado a esse tipo de interação.

Em entrevista à BBC News Mundo (serviço em espanhol da BBC), Bariso afirma que Tim Cook é conhecido por fazer longas (e incômodas) pausas. Já Jeff Bezos tem um método: no início de reuniões ele toma um tempo longo para ler relatórios em silêncio antes de começar o diálogo.

“Essa regra sempre foi uma ferramenta valiosa de inteligência emocional porque permite equilibrar raciocínio e emoção, em vez de reagir baseado apenas em sentimentos“, diz Bariso.

Um caso célebre dessa regra envolveu Steve Jobs, que levou quase 20 segundos para rebater um ataque pessoal, levando a uma resposta contundente.

Era o ano de 1997. Jobs, que havia acabado de voltar à Apple, participava de um encontro com desenvolvedores.

Alguém da plateia afirmou na ocasião que ele “não sabia do que estava falando”.

No período que pareceu uma eternidade para quem presenciou o ataque e aguardou a resposta, Jobs tomou um pouco de água e alguns segundos para pensar até começar a responder.

“Você sabe…“, ele diz. “Algumas pessoas às vezes gostam de você, mas…” E daí Jobs silencia novamente por cerca de oito segundos.
