Resposta para alta resistência do tardígrado pode ser útil para humanos no futuro

Um dos maiores – e mais recentes – mistérios da biologia animal é a resistência do tardígrado – também conhecido como “urso de água”: o pequeno ‘notável’, que tem entre 0,3 e 1,2 milímetros de tamanho, intriga cientistas devido a sua quase invulnerabilidade, já que ele pode sobreviver ao vácuo e ao frio do espaço, a temperaturas exageradamente altas e volumes de radiação mais que suficientes para matar a nós, humanos, em pouco tempo.

Não mais: de acordo com uma pesquisa publicada no jornal científico Molecular Cell, cientistas da Universidade da Carolina do Norte descobriram o que leva o tardígrado a ser tão resistente – e como isso pode ser útil para os humanos no futuro.

Antes da pesquisa, o consenso era que a alta resistência do tardígrado se originava de um tipo de açúcar chamado “trealose”, cuja produção se dá a partir do estado de alerta ou estresse do animal. Os problemas com essa teoria, porém, logo se fizeram evidentes: outros animais bem menos resistentes também produzem a trealose (alguns o fazem até mesmo sem estado de alerta), mas eles também o fazem em volumes bem maiores que o diminuto urso de água. Alguns chegam a produzir 20% de sua massa corporal do açúcar, enquanto o tardígrado não ultrapassa os 2%.

O segredo, segundo os pesquisadores, reside em uma proteína exclusiva do tardígrado. De modo geral, as proteínas e cadeias de aminoácidos possuem uma estrutura de três dimensões (3D), mas no caso da ‘criaturinha’ estudada, ela não segue esse padrão, agindo de forma relativamente aleatória.

“Uma das coisas mais interessantes para nós, é descobrir como essas proteínas intrinsecamente desordenadas funcionam”, disse o biólogo e coautor do estudo, Thomas C. Boothby. “É uma questão bem interessante sobre como uma proteína sem uma estrutura tridimensional definida pode executar sua função dentro de uma célula”.

Para descobrir a resposta, os cientistas da Universidade da Carolina do Norte extraíram os genes responsáveis pela produção dessa proteína, percebendo que o tardígrado ficava bem mais suscetível ao ressecamento de seu corpo sem eles.

Inversamente, os genes extraídos foram injetados em outros corpos, como fermentos e leveduras, fazendo com que estes se tornassem mais resistentes ao efeito de “secar”. “O ingrediente secreto do urso de água pode tornar outros organismos até 100 vezes mais resistentes”.

De uma forma bem simples: a proteína do tardígrado se comporta similarmente à trealose em outros animais, como os nemátodos, executando a mesma função – formar uma espécie de carapaça cristalizada que protege o alvo de danos externos. No caso do urso de água, porém, a proteína em questão é bem mais resistente, iniciando no animal um processo chamado de “vitrificação” – a grosso modo, o tardígrado vira uma estátua de cristal. A vitrificação, ao contrário do ressecamento, previne células essenciais de ressecarem, mantendo-as vivas e podendo “despertar” o animal tempos depois (ênfase em “tempos”: cientistas do passado especularam que o tardígrado poderia sobreviver por mais de 30 anos neste estado).

Mas não pense que os cientistas estão pesquisando isso para transformar você na versão real dos “Inumanos” da Marvel. A especulação da aplicação da proteína no ambiente humano tem premissas mais práticas: vacinas, por exemplo, são extremamente instáveis, exigindo copiosas quantidades de dinheiro e estrutura para mantê-las firmes – vide a vacina da Pfizer-BioNTech contra a Covid-19, que requer refrigeração mínima constante de -70º C, por exemplo.

Aplicar essa proteína dentro deste âmbito serviria, teoricamente, para estabilizar os elementos que compõem as vacinas, evitando que suas amostras se destruam durante processos de transporte ou manipulação laboratorial. Considerando como essa proteína funciona para o pequeno tardígrado, a ideia não parece tão distante da realidade quanto se pode imaginar, já que vacinas e medicações instáveis poderiam ser mantidas em temperatura ambiente, economizando recursos de estrutura e eliminando a necessidade de refrigeração.

O único impedimento, até o momento, é como aplicar esse conceito.
