WhatsApp: Telegram e Signal têm milhões de downloads após novas regras do aplicativo do Facebook

Desde que o WhatsApp anunciou no início de janeiro mudanças em seus termos de uso, consultorias especializadas estão vendo uma migração de usuários para aplicativos rivais de mensagens instantâneas.

O Signal e o Telegram, principais concorrentes do WhatsApp, defendem ter políticas rígidas de proteção de dados e de segurança em torno da comunicação de seus usuários. As empresas já oferecem há alguns anos serviços gratuitos de mensagens criptografadas.

Enquanto isso, em sua nova política anunciada em 4 de janeiro, o WhatsApp determinou que usuários fora da Europa devem permitir que o aplicativo compartilhe dados com sua controladora, o Facebook. Caso os novos termos não sejam aceitos até 8 de fevereiro, o uso do aplicativo será descontinuado.

Segundo analistas, essa mudança drástica está por trás do êxodo de usuários do Whatsapp nos últimos dias.

Rivais com crescimentos vertiginosos

De acordo com a consultoria Sensor Tower, o Signal foi baixado 246 mil vezes na semana anterior ao anúncio de mudanças pelo WhatsApp. Na semana seguinte, o aplicativo chegou a 8,8 milhões de novos usuários.

Alguns países viram particularmente enormes saltos, como a Índia, onde os downloads passaram de 12 mil para 2,7 milhões; ou os Estados Unidos, onde o aumento foi de 63 mil para 1,1 milhão.

Em uma série de tuítes, o Signal chegou a indicar que, devido à rápida e crescente demanda, houve inicialmente problemas na criação de grupos no aplicativo e no recebimento de códigos de segurança — depois solucionados.

A ferramenta já foi elogiada pelo empresário Elon Musk e por Edward Snowden, ex-agente de inteligência que tornou público detalhes das atividades de espionagem pelo governo americano.

“Eu uso todos os dias e ainda não estou morto“, escreveu Snowden no Twitter.

O Telegram, por sua vez, teve 6,5 milhões de downloads em todo o mundo na última semana de dezembro e chegou a 11 milhões nos sete dias após o anúncio do WhatsApp.

Apenas nos EUA, o aplicativo passou de 272 mil novos usuários para 671 mil neste período.

Em mensagem publicada nesta terça-feira (12/01), o Telegram comemorou ter ultrapassado a marca de 500 milhões de usuários.

Vantagens e riscos para o WhatsApp

Dados do WhatsApp não serão divididos apenas com o Facebook, mas também com outras marcas pertencentes à empresa fundada por Mark Zuckerberg, como Instagram e Messenger

Nesse mesmo período, os downloads totais do WhatsApp caíram de 11,3 milhões para 9,2 milhões.

Apesar disso, Craig Chapple, analista da Sensor Tower, destaca que isso não significa necessariamente um grande problema para o WhatsApp, que foi baixado 5,6 bilhões de vezes desde seu lançamento, em 2014.

“Será difícil para os rivais quebrarem os hábitos do usuário, e (o WhatsApp) continuará a ser uma das plataformas de mensagens mais populares e usadas do mundo“, disse ele.

Chapple acrescenta que “será interessante” observar se a maré favorável ao Signal e ao Telegram continuará ou se em breve recuará, com usuários voltando ao aplicativo de costume.

Diante das críticas sobre sua política de dados, o WhatsApp esclareceu que as informações a serem compartilhadas com o Facebook não incluirão mensagens, trocas nos grupos ou registros de chamadas.

Mas o aplicativo vai compartilhar com sua empresa-mãe o número de telefone associado ao nome do usuário, assim como a marca e o modelo de telefone que utiliza.

Além disso, geraram reações a previsão de compartilhamento dos endereços de Protocolo de Internet (IP), com os quais se poderá localizar as conexões de uma pessoa; e também de informações sobre pagamentos feitos através do WhatsApp e sobre o tempo gasto no aplicativo.

Tais dados não serão divididos apenas com o Facebook, mas também com outras marcas pertencentes à empresa fundada por Mark Zuckerberg, como Instagram e Messenger.

“A política de privacidade e as atualizações das condições são comuns na indústria e estamos avisando os usuários que revisem as mudanças, as quais entrarão em vigor em 8 de fevereiro“, disse um porta-voz do Facebook à agência de notícias AFP.
