Independência do Brasil

A independência do Brasil foi proclamada em 7 de setembro de 1822, pelo então Príncipe Regente, Dom Pedro de Alcântara.

Esta ocasião também é chamada de “Grito de Independência“, pois Dom Pedro teria dito em alto e bom som a frase “independência ou morte” à guarda que o acompanhava.

No dia 1º de dezembro do mesmo ano, D. Pedro foi coroado imperador do Brasil, com o título de D. Pedro I.

Causas da Independência do Brasil

Foram várias as causas da Independência do Brasil.

Podemos destacar o desentendimento entre os deputados portugueses e brasileiros nas Cortes de Lisboa, a vontade da elite econômica brasileira em acabar com o monopólio comercial português e as ideias iluministas a respeito da liberdade dos povos.

Processo de Independência do Brasil

O processo de independência do Brasil também é distinto das demais colônias da América, porque aqui, a Família Real Portuguesa ficou instalada de 1808 a 1820, tornando a luta diferente dos demais territórios.

Vejamos como isso aconteceu.

A vinda da Família Real para o Brasil

No início do século XIX, parte da Europa estava dominada pelas tropas do imperador dos franceses, Napoleão Bonaparte. Seu principal inimigo era a Inglaterra.

Em 1806, o imperador decretou o Bloqueio Continental, que obrigava a todas as nações da Europa fecharem seus portos ao comércio inglês. Com isso, Napoleão pretendia derrotar a Inglaterra pela via econômica.

Nessa época, Portugal era governado pelo Príncipe Regente D. João, que era pressionado por Napoleão para fechar os portos portugueses ao comércio inglês.

Ao mesmo tempo, queria manter as relações comerciais com a Inglaterra, fornecedora dos produtos manufaturados consumidos em Portugal, e também compradores de mercadorias portuguesas e brasileiras.

Para resolver a situação, o embaixador inglês em Lisboa convenceu D. João a transferir-se com a Corte para o Brasil. Desse modo, os ingleses garantiam o acesso ao mercado brasileiro e a família real portuguesa evitava a deposição da dinastia de Bragança pelas forças napoleônicas.

No dia 29 de novembro de 1807, a Família Real, fidalgos e funcionários partiram para o Brasil escoltados por quatro navios britânicos. No dia seguinte, as tropas francesas invadiram Lisboa.

Chegada ao Brasil

No dia 22 de janeiro de 1808, D. João chega a Salvador, onde decretou a Abertura dos Portos do Brasil às Nações Amigas de Portugal.

Isso pôs fim ao monopólio comercial português no Brasil. Rapidamente, os produtos ingleses começaram a chegar e um grande número de firmas inglesas se instalaram no Brasil.

Em sua estadia na capital baiana, D. João também fundou a Escola de Cirurgia da Bahia, o equivalente às atuais faculdades de medicina. Após três meses em Salvador, rumou para o Rio de Janeiro, onde desembarcou em março do mesmo ano.

Em 1810, D. João assinou o Tratado de Comércio e Navegação. Entre outros atos, este estabelecia a taxa de 15% sobre a importação de produtos ingleses, enquanto Portugal pagava 16% e as outras nações 24%.

Em 1815, após a derrota definitiva de Napoleão Bonaparte, as potências europeias reuniram-se no Congresso de Viena. O objetivo era restaurar na Europa o regime absolutista anterior à Revolução Francesa.

Para obter o reconhecimento da dinastia de Bragança e o direito de participar do Congresso, em 16 de dezembro de 1815 D. João elevou o Brasil ao Reino Unido de Portugal e Algarves.

Assim, o Brasil deixava de ser colônia e passou a ter o mesmo status político de Portugal. Isto significava participar da política do Reino, enviando deputados às cortes de Lisboa. Era um passo importante para a emancipação política do território.

Revolução Pernambucana (1817)

No entanto, nem todos estavam satisfeitos com o governo de Dom João VI no Brasil. Várias províncias brasileiras sentiam-se abandonadas e viam que as melhoras só beneficiavam a capital.

Desta maneira, em Recife, no atual estado de Pernambuco, instala-se uma revolta, que pretendia fundar outro país chamado Confederação do Equador. A resposta de Dom João VI foi imediata e o movimento reprimido.

A Revolução do Porto (1820)

Desde a vinda da família real para o Brasil, Portugal estava à beira do caos. Além da grave crise econômica e do descontentamento popular, o sistema político era marcado pela tirania do comandante inglês, que governava o país.

Tudo isso levou os portugueses a aderirem ao movimento revolucionário, que teve início na cidade do Porto em 24 de agosto de 1820.

A Revolução Liberal do Porto pretendia derrubar a administração inglesa, recolonizar o Brasil, promover a volta de D. João VI para Portugal e elaborar uma Constituição.

Diante desses acontecimentos, no dia 7 de março de 1821, D. João VI anunciou sua partida. No entanto, deixa no Brasil seu filho mais velho e herdeiro do trono, Dom Pedro, fazendo-o regente do Brasil.

No dia 26 de abril de 1821, D. João VI parte para Portugal, com a rainha Dona Carlota Joaquina, o príncipe Dom Miguel e as filhas do casal.

Do Dia do Fico à Independência

Aclamação de Dom Pedro I, Imperador do Brasil, no Campo de Santana, Rio de Janeiro. Jean Baptiste-Debret, 1822

O novo regente do Brasil, D. Pedro, tinha 23 anos. Várias medidas das cortes de Lisboa buscaram diminuir o poder do Príncipe Regente e, desse modo, pôr fim à autonomia do Brasil.

A insistência das Cortes para que D. Pedro voltasse a Portugal despertou atitudes de resistência no Brasil. No dia 9 de janeiro de 1822 foi entregue ao Príncipe Regente uma petição com 8.000 assinaturas solicitando que não abandonasse o território brasileiro.

Cedendo às pressões D. Pedro respondeu:

“Como é para o bem de todos e felicidade geral da Nação, estou pronto. Diga ao povo que fico”.

O Dia do Fico era mais um passo para a independência do Brasil.

No entanto, em algumas províncias brasileiras, os partidários dos portugueses não eram favoráveis ao governo de D. Pedro.

O general Avilés, comandante do Rio de Janeiro e fiel às Cortes de Lisboa, tentou obrigar o embarque do regente, mas foi frustrado pela mobilização dos brasileiros, que ocupavam o Campo de Santana.

Os acontecimentos desencadeavam uma crise no governo, e os ministros portugueses demitiram-se. O príncipe formou um novo ministério, sob a liderança de José Bonifácio, até então vice-presidente da Junta Governativa de São Paulo.

No mês de maio, o governo brasileiro estabelecia que as determinações vindas de Portugal só poderiam ser acatadas após a aprovação de D. Pedro.

Enquanto isso, na Bahia, desencadeava-se a luta entre tropas portuguesas e brasileiras. Por sua vez, as Cortes em Portugal tomaram medidas como:

  • declararam ilegítima a Assembleia Constituinte reunida no Brasil;
  • o governo do Príncipe Regente foi declarado ilegal;
  • este deveria regressar imediatamente a Portugal.

Diante da atitude da metrópole, o movimento pela separação ganhava mais adeptos.

Grito do Ipiranga: “Independência ou Morte!“

Dom Pedro resolveu partir para a província de São Paulo a fim de garantir o apoio dos líderes locais. A princesa Dona Leopoldina seria a regente durante a ausência do marido.

No dia 7 de setembro de 1822, voltando para o Rio de Janeiro, D. Pedro se encontrava às margens do riacho Ipiranga em São Paulo, quando recebeu os últimos decretos de Lisboa, um dos quais o transformava num simples governador, sujeito às autoridades das Cortes.

Essa atitude o levou a decidir que estavam cortados os laços que uniam o Brasil a Portugal. Assim, ordenou que todos os presente tirassem dos uniformes as insígnias portuguesas que levavam e teria gritado “Independência ou Morte”. Daquele momento em diante este seria o lema de todos os brasileiros.

No dia 12 de outubro do mesmo ano D. Pedro foi aclamado como o primeiro imperador do Brasil, com o título de D. Pedro I, sendo coroado em 1º de dezembro de 1822.
