Engenheiros criam sabre de luz de verdade capaz de cortar aço

Na terça-feira (13/10/20), um evento épico foi transmitido pelo YouTube: o engenheiro James Hobson, do canal The Hacksmith, mostrou um sabre de luz real, do tipo usado pelos Jedis no filme Star Wars, poderoso o suficiente para cortar uma porta de aço.

Sobre o fantástico e mortal equipamento, o líder da equipe de engenheiros afirma que se trata do “primeiro sabre de luz retrátil baseado em plasma do mundo”. Seu punho, construído no estilo steampunk, é capaz de enviar um fluxo laminar de gás propano líquido comprimido e oxigênio, que queima a uma temperatura de 2,2 mil graus Celsius.

A queima ocorre de forma concentrada através de bicos laminares utilizados pelos construtores de forma que permite o escape de um fluxo extremamente concentrado de gás, formando um feixe de plasma. Esses bicos são os mesmos utilizados na indústria para soprar o vidro incandescente e custam cerca de US$ 4 mil cada.

O funcionamento do sabre de luz

O primeiro efeito de um sabre de luz, a cor, é obtida por meio da adição de alguns produtos químicos à mistura. Por exemplo: colocando cloreto de sódio (sal de cozinha), o feixe do sabre se torna amarelo, como o da Rey (Daisy Ridley) no Episódio IX: A Ascensão de Skywalker.

Ácido bórico torna o feixe verde, o cloreto de estrôncio fica vermelho e o de cálcio faz uma cor âmbar.

O segundo item do sabre de luz, a energia, precisaria de uma usina nuclear para ser como a que vemos nos filmes, segundo Hobson. Na falta de uma usina disponível, a galera do Hacksmith adaptou uma mochila personalizada para servir de fonte, com um circuito que controla o fluxo de gás.

Finalmente, quanto à força, o sabre artesanal mostrou-se supereficiente ao passar direto por uma porta de aço.
