“Fadiga do Zoom” após reuniões virtuais é mais comum em mulheres; entenda

Essa nova rotina serviu de inspiração para a realização de um estudo que explora o sentimento de exaustão após chamadas de vídeo. A pesquisa foi publicada na revista científica Technology, Mind and Behavior, e os resultados mostraram que as mulheres são as mais afetadas pelo que pode ser chamado de “fadiga pós-zoom”.

De acordo com o estudo, uma a cada sete mulheres diz se sentir muito ou extremamente exausta (13,8%), enquanto apenas 5,5% dos homens (1 a cada 20) entrevistados disseram o mesmo. Participaram da pesquisa 10.322 pessoas entre fevereiro e março, que foram entrevistadas através de uma escala de fadiga e exaustão desenvolvida pelos pesquisadores. O método procura entender as diferenças individuais de cansaço após o uso prolongado de tecnologias de videoconferência no ano passado.

A pesquisa também busca compreender como a pandemia da COVID-19 atinge determinados grupos de pessoas. Jeffrey Hancock, professor de comunicação da Universidade de Stanford e co-autor do estudo, diz já ter ouvido histórias de que a fadiga provocada pelo zoom afeta mais as mulheres, e que agora tem dados que comprovam isso e que ainda revelam quais são os motivos.

Pressão com a aparência

Os cientistas descobriram que o que contribui para a exaustão entre as mulheres é a questão da “atenção autocentrada”, que consiste na preocupação social excessiva com a aparência durante as chamadas de vídeo. Para chegar a esta conclusão, os pesquisadores fizeram perguntas que questionavam se existe a preocupação de se ver em vídeo e do quanto perturbador pode ser a pessoa assistir a ela mesma.

Os resultados mostraram que as mulheres responderam a essas perguntas em níveis mais altos do que os homens, descobrindo que elas são mais propensas a ser autocentradas do que os homens quando estão na presença de espelhos. Esse sentimento, quando prolongado, pode resultar em emoções negativas, ou ainda no que os cientistas chamam de “ansiedade de espelho”, na tradução literal.

Outro fator que acaba contribuindo para a ansiedade é a necessidade de estar sempre com o rosto na câmera, sem ter para onde correr. Ao contrário de reuniões pessoais, em que as pessoas conseguem se mexer e se alongar, por exemplo, sem sair do campo de visão, o mesmo não acontece em videoconferências. A pesquisa revelou ainda que as mulheres são as menos prováveis a tirarem intervalos durante as reuniões.

Personalidade e raça

Além da questão de gênero, os pesquisadores associaram diferenças entre as personalidades e as reações com o uso prolongado de ferramentas como o Zoom. Segundo o estudo, pessoas mais extrovertidas apresentaram níveis menores de exaustão do que as introvertidas. Pessoas mais calmas e emocionalmente estáveis também apresentam menos cansaço do que indivíduos mais ansiosos.

Em relação à idade, a pesquisa revela que pessoas mais jovens apresentam níveis maiores de cansaço em comparação com os mais velhos. A questão racial também foi considerada, com o estudo mostrando que pessoas não brancas possuem níveis maiores, mas discretos, de ansiedade do que pessoas brancas. Por fim, o estudo busca encontrar novas soluções para abordar o assunto, recomendando que as empresas revejam a forma em que funcionam com o trabalho remoto.
